The interesting thing about these complex reports for energy analysis of an addition, alteration, or new construction project is that many times the homeowner can create the reports themselves. The main limiting factor is the amount of time required to learn the software. My favorite comparison to the home energy analysis profession is that of a national tax preparer office like HR Block or Liberty. Basically an individual can prepare a 1040 form for their taxes and the government will accept it, as long as it is prepared correctly. At the point where your taxes become too complex it might make sense to have a tax prep office take care of the forms for you. In most instances you can walk in any office nationwide and have your 1040 form prepared for you.
Now switch out the 1040 form with Rescheck, Comcheck, Manual J, Manual S, or Manual D. If you need one of these calculations you may be able to create it yourself depending on your understanding of the code, knowledge of the software, and time available to create the reports. At the point your home is too complex, the time needed to learn Rescheck web or Rescheck Desktop is too much, or your understanding of the newest IECC building code is too small it might make sense to hire an independent energy auditor to take care of the Rescheck, Comcheck, Manual J, Manual S, Manual D for you.
